SMARTPHONE users are worried Big Brother is watching them and tracing their every move through their device.

New research by consumer ratings agency Canstar Blue found 29 per cent of smartphone owners were concerned their whereabouts could be tracked through their phone.

The data also showed nearly one in five smartphone users (19 per cent) were shocked by the size of their phone bill with Generation Y the most likely to have experienced bill shock (27 per cent).

Canstar Blue spokeswoman Amy Partington said Australians were also untruthful when signing smartphone contracts.

"We found one in 20 people were actually lying during the application process of their phone,'' she said.

The data showed nearly one in five smartphone users were shocked by the size of their phone bill.

"When there were increased numbers of people lying during this process there were an increased number of people shocked about the size of their bill.

"If they are lying through the application process they should consider if they can really afford the phone or are they creating more problems for themselves down the track.''

The research also found one in 10 smartphone users felt locked into a mobile phone plan they couldn't afford.

Ms Partington encouraged consumers to thoroughly read through phone contacts before signing on the dotted line.

When it comes to social etiquette, 32 per cent of respondents admitted they used their smartphone during meals with friends or loved ones.

Three in five respondents (60 per cent) believed it was inappropriate for children under 16 to have a smartphone.

Australian Communications Consumer Action Network spokeswoman Elise Davidson said there was no doubt Australians were addicted to their phones.

"You can see it everywhere you go, people are using smartphones walking down the street and on public transport,'' she said.

"Australians are very enthusiastic about new technologies and have one of the highest uptake of smartphones in the world with about 52 per cent of people with a smartphone.''
