WHEN American warships dock in Sydney Harbour the catch-cry is ''lock up your daughters'' as the bars of Kings Cross bulge with big spending, hard charging US sailors.

For the government's technical guardians, on the lookout for cyber espionage, it was ''lock up your servers'' yesterday morning as three Chinese warships docked in Sydney Harbour.

China operates a notorious cyber spying program around the globe and the ranks of black clad marines armed with assault rifles lining the decks of the warships ensured that no one was getting too close to the People's Liberation Army Navy vessels.

As the three ships tied up at Fleet Base East at Garden Island yesterday morning Chinatown was ready for a run on yum cha, peking duck and live lobsters from up to 1000 Chinese sailors.

The biggest contingent of PLAN ships ever to visit this country steamed in to Sydney on their way home from counter-piracy duty in the Gulf of Aden.

The cruise missile armed guided missile frigates Yi Yang and Chang Zhou and the supply ship Qing Dao Hu will be in port for four days.

The Chinese and Australian navies will share information about counter-piracy operations during the visit.

Australia is playing a key role in encouraging a more open approach from the Chinese military and the ship visit comes after a visit to Shanghai in May by HMAS Ballarat to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and China.

Two years ago an Australian ship conducted the first ever live fire exercise by a foreign vessel with the Chinese navy.

In October Australia played host to Chinese and New Zealand personnel for a disaster relief exercise.

''Australia is committed to developing strong and positive defence relations with China through dialogue and practical activities,'' Defence Minister Stephen Smith said.
