YOUR Christmas wish has been answered and you found a tablet, iPod or smartphone waiting for you under the tree. What should you do now?

Let's go with a few assumptions. Firstly, that your device has enough charge for you to start playing and you can work out how to recharge it.

Let us also assume you have wifi in your house, so you can easily connect your device to the internet by finding your home network in the wifi settings.

Your new toy is probably running off an operating system that sounds like a dessert option, such as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, or an iDevice running iOS 6.

Regardless of the type, you'll navigate your tablet by touching the screen and using applications, or apps, that are already loaded or you can buy through the app store.

If your tablet is an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, you will need to get an Apple ID. This will be used to purchase apps, music and video from iTunes and store your photos and data in the iCloud.

If your tablet is an Android device, you'll need a Google account.

The tablet you received might also be 3G. You'll need a SIM card and data plan from one of the carriers.

Remember to use wifi instead of the mobile network where possible, because it's cheaper and faster.

Next step is to set up the basics or your email and syncing calendars and contacts. On an iPad, go to Settings, then Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

If it's an Android tablet, you will get a prompt when you start to put in your Gmail mail settings, or go to Menu, Settings, Accounts and sync.

1. Flipboard: This has been the must-have app on iPad since it launched in 2010. It's now available on Android too. You select the websites you are interested, from categories such as sport, entertainment and news, and you then flip through them like articles in a magazine.

2. Snapseed: There are plenty of apps you can use to process your images. This one is popular, it's free and it's on iOS and Android. Give extra punch to your photos before showing your friends.

3. ABC iView: Sorry Android users, this is iOS only. Your iPad, or even your iPhone, can be a great way to catch up on shows when you're not in front of your TV. Nearly half of the programs viewed on iView are now done so through an Apple iOS device. Just be wary of data limits when using it on the mobile network.

4. Foxtel Go: If you're a Foxtel subscriber, this is like having another set top box where ever you go. It's only iPad now but an Android version is coming soon.

5. Find My iPhone: You may never need it but you'll kick yourself if you don't have it when the time comes. If you lose your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad , you can log onto another iOS device or the web and make your device beep loudly even if it's on silent mode, locate it on a map and even remotely wipe its data if it has been stolen.

6. Kindle: Whether you have an iPad or Android tablet, you can use it as an ebook reader. Download your books straight from Amazon and into your tablet.

7. Google Maps: There was a time when Google Maps was the standard. Don't be lured into using Apple Maps just because it's there. Download Google Maps and save yourself from going astray.

8. Facebook: Assuming this is one of your social networks of choice, then this is an app you'll want close at hand.

9. Angry Birds Star Wars: Why do you need a game in which you fling angry birds through space? Well, most of the rest of the world seems to think they can't live without it.

10. Words With Friends: Think of it as being similar to Scrabble except you play against people on their tablet or smartphone, whether they be real-life friends or strangers to challenge.
