USUALLY, most women wouldn't envy Lisa Wilkinson's 3am wake-up call. But this week, many will wish they were in the Today presenter's shoes.

On Thursday, the co-host's chair, usually reserved for Karl Stefanovic, will be filled for an hour by actor and heartthrob Hugh Jackman. "I'm thinking Thursday is going to be a good day in the office," Wilkinson says.

Wilkinson has just signed on for another three years with the show, joining Stefanovic, who agreed to another three years in October.

But with Stefanovic on holidays, Wilkinson jokes she may well prefer her new co-host.

"Karl had better watch out," she says. "What do they say about holidays in television? It's a perfect Christmas present to our viewers."

It is also a nice reward for Wilkinson, who signed her new contract last week.

"Gynge [Nine chief executive David Gyngell] first started talking to me in July at the Olympics, and he said to me, 'You could do this for another five years if you wanted, or more'," she told The Sunday Telegraph. "I said, 'Hang on, this is the sort of thing you can only do in bite-sized chunks. Three years sounds good to me'."

The chemistry between Wilkinson and Stefanovic has been credited for the revival of Today, which was losing badly to Channel Seven when they signed up but is now just 32,000 viewers behind Sunrise nationally.

She says Stefanovic is like a brother, albeit a naughty one. "It's a bit like working with an unexploded bomb," she laughs. "You are never quite sure when it's going to go off, or how much the bang is going to be."

Wilkinson would not reveal the value of her contract, or whether she, like Seven's female morning host Mel Doyle, earns less than her male counterpart. Stefanovic's contract is rumoured to be worth $850,000.

"Who knows this stuff?" she says. "I can guarantee you the last thing anyone on our show is going to talk about is their salaries."

Wilkinson is among a group of women aged over 50 working in Australian television that also includes Tracy Grimshaw and Anne Sanders.
