WEARY Christmas shoppers seeking a caffeine hit will be getting more - or less - than what they wanted, depending where they buy coffee.
Despite being charged similar prices, scientific tests reveal some cafe customers are getting a weak 25mg kick in their cup, while others have a jolt as high as 214mg.
Associate Professor Ben Desbrow, from the Griffith University School of Public Health, warned consumers could be getting "wired" on higher doses of caffeine.
"What is concerning is that if you were interested in controlling caffeine intake, there is no real way to determine how much you are consuming," he said.
Donut King and Muffin Break were the least consistent of nine assessed chains, a paper to be published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis shows. Gloria Jean's, McDonald's and Starbucks recorded the most consistent results.
Muffin Break national operations manager John Macphail said: "We do our utmost to ensure all franchise owners are following tried and tested procedures, occasionally there can be variances".
Donut King did not respond.
