IT seems the recent clean-out at 60 Minutes has left space for a veteran's welcome return to Nine with Ray Martin in talks about reviving his career on the program that made him a household name.

Having cut $450,000 from the budget through the cancellation of reporter Liam Bartlett and producer John Westacott's contracts, baby-faced savant EP Tom Malone has extended an olive branch to Martin, who quit Nine in high dudgeon in 2008 - three decades after joining Nine's flagship current affairs program alongside George Negus and Ian Leslie in 1978.

Nine insiders played down Martin's return. While confirming the much-loved veteran would file stories for the program in 2013, they denied the role would be full-time.

It is hoped that Martin will help 60 Minutes reclaim its traditional news stranglehold over Seven, which has been making inroads with its offering, Sunday Night.

Nine could certainly use Martin's grace and poise on major events.

The move mirrors Seven's decision to bolster Sunday Night's line-up with the recruitment of Mike Willesee to a senior reporting role.

Martin, who in recent times has been popping up in cameos on ABC-TV's satirical comedy The Hamster Wheel, left Nine after allegedly clashing with management over budget cuts to the revered Sunday show.

After working on 60 Minutes for eight years, he took the helm of The Midday Show in 1985, remaining there until 1993. In 1994 he moved to the anchor's chair on A Current Affair before returning to 60 Minutes to file special reports for the program from 1998.

A second stint on ACA saw him return to the host's chair from 2003 to 2005.
