HE has long admitted to emulating his hero Russell Crowe on the big screen.
Yesterday Sam Worthington went one step further, joining his idol and mentor on the list of celebrities who have had a run-in with US authorities - getting pepper-sprayed and handcuffed in the process.
The Newcastle-born actor, who is currently playing a drug enforcement agent in the movie Ten opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger, caused a stir at the Vortex Bar And Grill in Atlanta when he was turned away by security for alleged drunken behaviour.
Staff claimed Worthington was intoxicated and unable to provide valid identification.
Witnesses said Worthington then shoved bouncer Jerry Link twice before Link pepper-sprayed him and placed him in handcuffs until police arrived. Slipping into his movie character, witnesses said he yelled: "I'm a DEA agent! You f ... ed up."
In his latest film Worthington plays Monster, a member of an elite Drug Enforcement Administration task force which robs a drug cartel safe house.
Mr Link told celebrity website TMZ Worthington was wearing a dirty hoodie and looked like a homeless person.
According to the police report, which referred to Worthington as Mr Samuel, Mr Link told police Worthington "appeared falling off balance" as he walked towards the restaurant and the actor was "very disrespectful" and "very drunk".
The police report said Mr Link tried to converse with "Mr Samuel" and tried to tell him why he could not enter.
"Mr Link then stated Mr Samuel was being disorderly verbally by using profane language," it said.
"Mr Link also stated Mr Samuel pushed him twice with his hands. Mr Link then pepper-sprayed Mr Samuel and handcuffed him until the police arrived."
The actor, who made his breakthrough in the movie Avatar, was later charged with disorderly conduct, though all charges against him were dropped after the doorman failed to appear in court.
The incident marked the first arrest for Worthington, who is fast establishing a reputation as the man most likely to replace Crowe as a Hollywood enfant terrible.
Worthington has long called upon the Gladiator star for advice on how to deal with fame, telling Elle last year that he looked to Crowe for guidance.
"He's helped me out a lot. There's no school that can tell you how to handle things like losing anonymity - he told me to handle it with sensitivity.
"It's hard to ask someone for their autograph. If someone asks, why snub them? They're braver than I am and deserve respect," Worthington said.
