THE head of Annesley College's boarding house allegedly called Aboriginal students "black bastards", allowed Year 11 girls to drink alcohol and held grudges.
In the Supreme Court yesterday, the college's lawyers challenged Rebecca Ramsay's $2.5 million unfair dismissal claim, saying that she had been fired for wilful misconduct, racism and rampant bullying.
Andrew Collett, for the college, told the court his client was justified in taking action against a woman who had mistreated students, parents and staff.
"Ms Ramsay permitted two Year 11 girls to consume alcoholic drinks at a party," Mr Collett said.
"She referred to Aboriginal students as 'black bastards' ... (and) told parents they would have to pay $5000 to repair a damaged fire door when she had been advised the real cost was $1800."
Mr Collett added: "Staff say they were scared of her and afraid to be one-on-one with her because she 'was always right' and held grudges."
Ms Ramsay, herself a former Annesley boarder, is suing the college over her dismissal in March 2010.
She claims the college mishandled "trivial complaints" and "petty jealousies", leaving her unable to find comparable employment.
Yesterday, Mr Collett told the court there was much more to the end of Ms Ramsay's seven-year tenure.
"She criticised her deputy in the presence of other staff (and) addressed kitchen staff in a disrespectful, demeaning manner," he said.
"One chef indicated he could not work with her ... another staff member says she was intimidating and held grudges."
He said Ms Ramsay made racist comments to a senior staff member in late 2009, in a phone call relating to Aboriginal students.
Mr Collett also said the college discovered two Year 11 girls had been drinking when one refused medication because of alcohol in her system.
"The girls were under the age of 18," he said.
He said Ms Ramsay was informed in writing of all allegations prior to her dismissal. "In her written response, she made misleading or untrue statements (and) denied the allegations."
The civil case before Justice Malcolm Blue continues.
