THE self-proclaimed head of the Comanchero bikie gang Mark Buddle faces a major test of his leadership, with his own members involved in a bloody internal war that has already left one dead.
The Clovelly boy, only 28, took over the club by default last year and now has to settle the factional war that has left one member dead after being shot and three others in hospital with bullet wounds.
In the past year there have been more than 100 shootings in Sydney, including scores of drive-by shootings and murders linked to bikies.
The bikie war has reached a stage where Premier Barry O'Farrell is understood to have expressed concern about them to senior police, amid fears it will appear the government and police are not in control.
Late yesterday afternoon, Police Minister Mike Gallacher met with the NSW Crime Commission and Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione to find new ways to crack down on the shootings, senior government sources said.
A senior NSW police officer said the Comanchero-related shootings was "about guys patching over" - when a member of one club shifts allegiances to another.
Normally gang members who leave a club risk being shot by former associates, angry that they have left and seeking payback. But the Comanchero's internal battle has resulted in its own members shooting newcomers they don't like.
One of those was Faalau Pisu, who was shot at a wedding reception about 12.20am on Monday. He had just patched over from another club to the Comanchero Milperra chapter.
"When someone new comes in from another group it creates tensions," the police officer said.
A bikie source said there was "real tension between the Maroubra chapter and the Milperra chapter".
And police say other members will be looking to Buddle to sort it out.
After the Sydney Airport brawl between the Hells Angels and Comanchero, bikie boss Mick Hawi was jailed and another former president Daux Ngakuru left the country.
"No one voted Buddle in, he kind of just took over," the officer said.
Adding to Buddle's woes was the arrest on Wednesday of one of his senior members at Maroubra.
Officers from Strike Force Raptor, specially set up to target bikies, charged the 25-year-old with three separate assaults.
Buddle has his own problems and faces court next year over a robbery-in-company charge.
The Comanchero made several plays last year to take over a number of bars in Kings Cross but failed.
"They were involved in quite a few skirmishes in the Cross area but seem to have backed off and things have settled down recently," said one officer from the Cross.
In the past year the most dramatic change in the bikie landscape has been the rise and rise of the Hells Angels under the direction of Felix Lyle. The club went on a major recruitment drive about a year after the airport brawl.
"There was a lot of patching over and that led to a lot of tit-for-tat shootings between the Hells Angels, Nomads and Comanchero," said another police officer.
In recent years the Hells Angels membership has gone from a hard-core 30-odd to about 200. They made their expansion intentions public, posting on their website the planned opening of their Bondi beach chapter.
Last year NSW police intelligence estimated there were more than 2000 bikies or associates in 21 outlaw motorcycle gangs across the state.
