THE X Factor could face a contestants' meltdown as it heads towards its Grand Final.
On Monday night's show, 14-year-old Shiane Hawke was clearly distressed after performing Cyndi Lauper hit True Colours.
Hawke visibly shook as she waited for judges Ronan Keating, Natalie Bassingthwaite, Guy Sebastian and Mel B to deliver their verdict.
The show's youngest contestant started crying when Sebastian quizzed her about the meaning of the song's lyrics.
Teen Bella Ferraro suffered a panic attack just before she performed 99 Red Balloons.
Psychologist Dr Janet Hall has warned that the pressure will intensify in coming weeks.
"The younger contestants are 'little pressure cookers' with highly aroused emotions and stress," Dr Hall said.
"Their nervous systems are highly strung. They feel the pressure of competing against older performers whom they know are 'old hands'."
Ferraro said she was hit by self-doubt in the minutes leading up to Monday's live performance.
The 18-year-old admits that crippling nerves have prevented her from performing well in the past.
"I wasn't feeling confident all day, and before I went on (stage) I was a mess," Ferraro says.
"There is that two minutes (before the song) where they show the interview package.
"I was shaking. You could see that I was uncomfortable. I could see the judges talking to each other. They were very worried.
"After I finished, I think it was the relief that made me so emotional.
"Natalie has texted me quite a lot asking if I'm alright. She is incredibly motherly and very nurturing."
The X Factor caused controversy when it lowered the age limit for contestants from 16 to 14 last year.
"Perhaps 14 is too young," Dr Hall says.
Producers FremantleMedia Australia say contestants are monitored throughout the competition.
"We take out duty of care with the contestants seriously and it is always a priority for the production," a FremantleMedia spokesperson said.
"Contestants under 16 have a parent with them at all times.
"All contestants have access to a clinical psychologist whenever required, and the psychologist also monitors each contestant throughout the competition.
"Our judges provide support to the artists they are mentoring. We all work with the contestants to ensure they are safe, comfortable and enjoying the experience."
