SHATTERED by the sudden death of his only sibling, Big Brother favourite Josh Moore has walked away from the Channel 9 series where he'd made his home for the past two months.

The Nova breakfast radio "street guy" returned to Adelaide last night, side-by-side with his parents Carolyn and Terry, who had just 24 hours earlier had been allowed into the BB "bubble" to share the grim news that their eldest son, Toby, 32, had died of a suspected heart attack.

Clearly still reeling, the 29-year-old reality TV contestant thanked "everyone for their support" as the Barossa Valley family left the airport together.

An unsuspecting Moore, hugely popular for his happy-go-lucky charm, was called to the show's Captain's Quarters late on Wednesday, where he was met by his parents and senior executives from Channel 9 and BB production company Southern Star.

He stayed overnight with his parents at a Gold Coast hotel, near the show's Dreamworld site, but confirmed the next morning he would quit the series to support his family in the wake of the tragedy.

Moore asked to tell his TV "family" of housemates why he was to leave the series and producers switched off the 24/7 cameras to allow them all to grieve with "Joshie" and farewell their friend in private.

He also rang his radio bosses to inform them of his loss. A Nova FM spokeswoman said that "we're just devastated for Josh and giving him all the time he needs".

"Hopefully, we'll be there for him to offer comfort and support," she said.

His emotional departure prompted the suspension of eviction voting this week, sparing Sam, Estelle and Angie, who had been up for elimination on Sunday night's now cancelled live show.

In its place, an extended version of weekend activities will air, including a tribute to Moore's adventures in the house.

Moore had been the only housemate not nominated for eviction.

He fell quickly into an intimate relationship with intruder "girlfriend" Ava, until she was eliminated two weeks after her arrival. She said she "was in transit and couldn't talk" when asked for comment yesterday.

Proceeds from voting registered so far this week will now be donated to the Salvation Army, a bequest welcomed by Moore and his parents.

BB host Sonia Kruger added her condolences, as did thousands of fans who rushed to post their shock and best wishes.

"I am devastated to hear of the sad loss of Josh's brother," Kruger said. "Along with the rest of the Big Brother crew, my heart goes out to Josh, his parents and their family. I wish them all the strength during this difficult time."

Series psychologist Dr Sarah Angel was rushed in to counsel housemates, guiding Moore's exit meeting with them.

"Josh was able to say what he wanted to say to them and they were able to ask questions and console him and that's a really important part of this process," Dr Angel said.

With only a few weeks of the competition remaining, she said they would "realise it was only a short period of time left before they can reunite with him".

"I think they are going to cope relatively well and move forward with it."

Big Brother 2012's Josh Moore.

Moore's mother, Carolyn is a school teacher and his father, Terry, was a ruckman who played 61 games in five seasons with North Melbourne and Hawthorn, including being a member of North's losing 1976 grand final team.

He was coached at North by the legendary Ron Barassi and forged a relationship with champion player and Brownlow Medallist Malcolm Blight. Moore joined the Adelaide Crows as a member of the match committee in 1996 and served under Blight, who coached the team to the 1997 and 98 premierships.

Blight was last night almost lost for words about the tragedy.

"Our family is feeling for the Moore family right now," he said.

After a protracted silence, he added: "The older you get, you just don't want to go through young people going before you and I'm sure Terry and Carolyn are the same."
