Brown v car: 'A few dings, I'll be right'

Brisbane Lions forward Jonathan Brown speaks about getting hit by a car while cycling.

IF Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown was any tougher, he'd rust.

While his mentor and former coach Leigh Matthews snapped a goalpost in half in 1982, Brown took on a car yesterday, and won.

The AFL superstar was on an early morning training ride with a group of Gold Coast cyclists and triathletes through the Tallebudgera Valley when his bike was hit by a car going through a roundabout.

Brown flew on to the car's bonnet with his elbow smashing the Hyundai's windscreen.

Pieces of his flesh were imbedded in the shattered glass as the car was towed away.

Brown was taken to hospital where he received 10 stitches but was discharged shortly after.

Just hours later he was having a coffee and describing the incident as a "little hiccup".

The incident sparked a flurry of posts on Twitter comparing Brown to marshall arts icon Chuck Norris who is the subject of a series of jokes about his legendary toughness.

"I'm fine, I've pulled up pretty well...a couple of little dings here and there but I'll be right for training," Brown said.

"I feel like I've played a game of footy. I count myself lucky I got away with minor injuries.

"I landed on all fours so I got up straight away.

"I had scans on my head and neck and around my hips, which were a little bit sore, but they were all clear. "

The woman motorist said the thud of Brown's body against her windscreen was sickening enough until she saw who she had hit.

Kathleen Ford was on her way to work at a nursing home at 7am when she collected Brown.

"I feel just so terrible about it," Ms Ford said.

"My teenage son is his biggest fan and he's going to hate me.

"I just didn't see him until he (Brown) was on my windscreen basically.

"He was very nice about it. Jokingly, he said to me 'what, you didn't see me? I'm the biggest cyclist out here!'.

"I think my car came off second-best."

Ms Ford said her 15-year-old son, Jamie, would be aghast to hear that she had skittled the Brisbane star.

"Jonathan presented him with a (Aussie Rules) trophy and medal and Jamie idolises him," she said.

Retired dual international Mat Rogers was part of the 20-strong group of cyclists with Brown but did not see or hear the crash as he was 300 metres down the road.

He did not know about Brown's accident until he received a phone call until former Titans teammate Chris Walker who was also on the ride.

"My heart just sunk. Chrissy told me Brownie got hit but it was the car that was no good," Rogers said.

"We ride out that way because there's never any cars so he is unlucky. But he is bloody lucky to just get away with a few stitches.

"Anything could happen if you get hit by a car. It was a freak accident.

"I had a coffee with him afterwards and he's in good spirits."

Brisbane coach Michael Voss said his heart was in his mouth when he received an early morning phone call from Lions football manager Dean Warren who opened with "have you heard about Brownie?"

"Whenever it starts like that, it's never a good finish. Especially when you then hear he got hit by a car. At least he is okay," Voss said.
