Meet Budgee, a mobile robot that follows you along to carry all your stuffa particular help for the elderly and disabled. Personal Tech Columnist Geoffrey A. Fowler takes Budgee for a spin around CES 2015.

THE world's largest consumer technology show will open its doors later today, revealing more than 200,000 square metres filled with fresh gadgets.

But not all devices at the Consumer Electronics Show are items you would see in your local electronics store. Some are downright wacky, while others are uncommonly useful.

GOODBYE IDIOT BOX: Television to take a quantum leap

Here are five unexpected gadgets that will make their Las Vegas debut today.

1. BACtrack Mobile Breathalyzer

This party-friendly gadget, about the size of a TicTac box, can analyse a user's breath for alcohol using the same technology as law enforcement.

The blue and white device connects to an Apple or Google-based smartphone using Bluetooth and uses an app to compare what you think your blood alcohol content might be to what it actually is.

Spokesman Shawn Casey said developers added a guessing feature to "teach" users to more accurately assess their alcohol use.

The device is on sale now for $US199 ($246) at backtrack.com.

2. Parrot H20

Don't think of it as lazy gardening. Think of it as saving a house plant. Parrot will show off a prototype of its H20 smart plant gadget at CES this year that connects to wi-fi networks and lets distant gardeners water their plants remotely.

The H20 is a stake-like device that sits in the soil around the plant and can be fitted with a standard plastic water bottle. When the H20 reports the plant is dry, users can water it remotely using a Parrot app for up to three weeks at a time.

It will be released later this year.

3. Polaroid Socialmatic

It looks like a giant Instagram icon, but the latest Polaroid release is a combined camera and printer that also runs Google Android software and can be used as a tablet.

The $US300 device features a 14-megapixel camera upfront, a 4.5-inch touchscreen on its back, and an extra 2-megapixel rear camera for selfies.

A Zink Instant Printer is built into its square form so photos can be printed in seconds, using special, ink-treated paper sold separately.

4. Motorola Scout 5000

Not content with producing gadgets for humans, Motorola will focus on pet dogs with this CES release. The Scout 5000 is a smart dog collar with a wide-angle camera, GPS chip, and wireless internet connection.

It can be connected to a smartphone over wi-fi to stream live video from the dog's collar, to notify the dog's owner of its barking, and to track a puppy's location.

The tracker will cost $US199 when it is released in April.

5. Ozobot Bit

These marble-shaped robots are designed to teach children how to code. The Ozobot Bit devices, due out on June 1 for $US50, respond to coloured lines drawn on tablet screens or just on sheets of paper.

Different colours make the robots respond in different ways, following a line to the left, for example, or performing a dance.
